The Picture Of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde : The Picture of Dorian Gray is the celebrated and controversial novel by Irish writer Oscar Wilde, combining Gothic atmosphere, psychological drama, philosophical ideas, and Wilde’s famous wit in a powerful exploration of beauty and corruption. The story begins when artist Basil Hallward paints an extraordinary portrait of the young and exceptionally handsome Dorian Gray. Basil is fascinated by Dorian’s beauty and believes the portrait to be among his finest works. Dorian soon meets Basil’s charismatic friend, Lord Henry Wotton, whose provocative ideas about youth, pleasure, beauty, and society profoundly influence him. Becoming increasingly aware that his physical beauty will inevitably fade, Dorian wishes that he could remain young forever while his portrait grows old in his place. His wish mysteriously becomes reality. As Dorian pursues a life increasingly shaped by pleasure and self-indulgence, his appearance remains untouched by time. Hidden away from the world, however, the portrait begins to change, revealing the consequences of his choices and becoming a disturbing reflection of his inner character. Through Dorian’s transformation, Wilde examines the conflict between outward appearance and inner morality. The novel raises enduring questions about whether beauty can exist independently of goodness, how influence shapes individual responsibility, and what happens when a person believes they can escape the consequences of their actions. The novel also offers a sharp critique of Victorian society, particularly its obsession with reputation and respectability. Wilde exposes the contradictions of a world in which appearances can conceal hypocrisy, selfishness, and moral decay. First published in 1890 and revised for book publication in 1891, The Picture of Dorian Gray caused considerable controversy but eventually became Oscar Wilde’s most famous work. Today, it is regarded as a masterpiece of Gothic and philosophical fiction and remains widely read for its elegant prose, memorable characters, dark atmosphere, and timeless exploration of youth, beauty, temptation, and conscience.
